‘We fought hard as children not to condemn the serious to hilarity. From the height of the mezzanine, the sculpted angels were life size and standing right beside us. They stared forward helplessly as my brother placed a cigarette between their prayer laden fingertips and giggled. I would rest over the balcony with ling skinny arms hanging down like ropes. I was there to see the lights. I was five' - Sunday mass, Maffra, Gippsland.
